Documentation Identification Number

From next year onwards i.e. 2011-12, all income tax returns should have Document Identification Number. This is apart from Permanent account number (PAN) and TAN. According to the new guidelines brought out by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the DIN will be mandatory “in respect of every notice, order, letter or any correspondence” with the department, by the taxpayers. DIN will be helpful in following up of refunds and other communication with department. This number will be given by PRO of Income tax department.
